What to expect this year: Big events coming up through the year

This post comes from the CON-SNP Co-Chair Corrie Vincent. You can learn more about Corrie here

Back to school and CON-SNP’s hitting the ground running! Your CON-SNP exec has been busy planning some BIG events for this year to help keep our SNPs engaged and promote healthy active living so make sure you keep an eye out for these events in the coming months

Infographic Design Competition – October

Want to practice your knowledge translation skills? Stretch your creativity muscles? Win free registration to the 2017 Canadian Obesity Summit in Banff?

CON-SNP is hosting its first ever infographic design competition! Knowledge translation is a critical component of all research especially clinical and health related research, but we don’t always get opportunities to practice these skills. This infographic design competition is meant to be a fun way to learn, practice or fine tune those skills (not to mention impress your supervisor on your next project!).

Research Blitz – January to April

What’s a research blitz? Think props, creativity and adrenaline all combined with your favourite research topic and voila! Research Blitz!

The research blitz is open to graduate and undergraduate students and is an opportunity to present your own proposed/completed research, or research concept that interests you in 1 minute! 1 minute, 1 slide, no animations or electronic media but creativity and props are encouraged!

Last year CON-SNP supported its first regional Research Blitz in Southern Ontario. This year we hope to expand the involvement in the Southern Ontario research blitz and support other chapters across Canada in hosting their own local or regional research blitzes!

Pedometer Challenge – March

Ready to walk the walk and track those steps? Start practicing now but the real competition starts in March for the National Pedometer Challenge. Did we mention there are prizes? March is the time of year when SNPs across put on their pedometers and challenge each other to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle. Individual and team prizes available!

ON-SNP is the student and new professional group of CON. Our events are dedicated to promoting healthy active living and the prevention and management of obesity and prevention and awareness of weight bias. Whatever you’re into CON-SNP has an event for you and that’s not to mention the MANY local events that take place throughout the year.

Not in touch with your local chapter? Find a chapter near you http://www.obesitynetwork.ca/list.aspx?gp=48. No chapter near you? Contact con.snp@gmail.com to start/revive a chapter near you or get information on how to participate as an individual.

I have a PhD in population health from the University of Ottawa looking at why children are sedentary, the difference between types of sedentary behaviour (as you’d expect screen time is much worse than reading a book!) and what we can do about it in Canada, and around the world. I completed my master’s at Queen’s University in kinesiology and epidemiology, and graduated from Acadia University with a double major in biology and kinesiology. I am also a Certified Exercise Physiologist with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, a Clinical Exercise Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine and a Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine/National Physical Activity Society. I love to be active, especially when I get to be outside and especially when I get to explore a new city!
